Each word was given a number and was to be sent in that manner.
Alfred Vail came up with the idea of giving each letter and pro-signs dots and dashes instead.
Samuel Morse patented the idea and used his name, and the rest is history.

Morse Code or Vail Code? The invention of the Morse code is generally attributed to Samuel F. B. Morse. Have we been mislead by historians? Have historians overlooked important documents?
